Shawn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Finance from the University of Notre Dame 1988 and is both a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) and a Certified Property Manager (CPM) with the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM).
Shawn and his wife, Kathie, enjoy travel and outdoor recreation on the Puget Sound while following the active lives of their four adult daughters and a growing generation of grandchildren.

Tom graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1984 with a BA in Finance and began his career as a commercial lending officer with First Interstate Bank (Wells Fargo) in Seattle. It was there that he and Shawn identified a market need for Coast and launched the first of their companies, Coast Property Management.
A former coach, scoutmaster, and basketball referee, in his spare time today Tom continues plays recreational basketball, remains active in his church and enjoys time with his wife, two sons, and daughter on the Puget Sound.
Mark Washington is a Senior Vice President at Eastdil Secured responsible for investments sales, equity and debt capital market transactions within the Pacific Northwest region. He has been in the commercial real estate industry for nearly 15 years and has held a number of industry positions. Similarly, Mark covered the Pacific Northwest with JLL and spent over 10 years at TIAA, now Nuveen Real Estate.
As a Senior broker, Mark has closed approximately $1billion of Investment Sale, Joint Venture and Development activity. During his tenure at TIAA, Mark was a Director of Investments, leading Acquisition and Asset management within the region. Mark invested over $800 million in acquisitions and joint ventures, assisted in the portfolio management of TIAA’s largest real estate fund, “The REA”, with $24 billion in gross assets. He also originated whole loans and subordinated debt, executed CMBS syndications, loan sales and distressed debt workout strategies.
He holds a B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in finance from Morehouse College, and a CFA from the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute. He is also an active member of ULI and NAIOP. Taking active roles on a number of initiatives targeted at bringing diversity, equity and inclusion to the commercial real estate industry.
In addition, he serves a member of the board of directors for two nonprofits, Construction for Change and City of Hope Safe Haven. He is also a former board director for SPAAT, a nonprofit based in Oakland, CA formed to assist student athletes from lower demographic communities matriculate and prepare for college. In 2020 he joined the University of Washington as an adjunct professor for the UW Real Estate Certificate Program.
Jaebadiah S. Gardner is an African-American, Mexican-American business man, multi-family real estate developer, author and is the Founder & CEO of GardnerGlobal, Inc., a privately held holding company. Jaebadiah earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and later earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Western Michigan Law School. Prior to development Jaebadiah worked for Turner Construction building commercial high-rises in downtown Seattle. He has built up a client base of private and non-profit clients in the real estate development space providing feasibility, pre- development and development services. Real Estate services also include property management and brokerage. Jaebadiah has worked on publicly subsidized affordable housing projects, workforce housing and market rate projects in Seattle bringing together city, private partners, community and design partners overcoming complex project hurdles. Jaebadiah has created a niche in providing non-profit/public and private market development services. Jaebadiah is the driving force behind real estate development and acquisition opportunities. He has served as a part-time instructor for the University of Washington and Seattle Central College. He currently serves as a Board of Trustee for the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, President of the University of Washington MAP Board and is a Board member for the Pike Place Senior Center and Food Bank. A remarkable athlete in high school, Keivarae was also well liked and appreciated for other qualities. He was voted student body president, was a top student and wrote poetry in his spare time. Recognizing the damage high school cliques can create to those feeling left out, he created a lunchtime program where he and other students would sit with special needs students. An engaging personality, Keivarae’s estranged father has been in prison most of his life. But he never let poverty or growing up in a single parent household hold him down. By his senior year in high school, Keivarae was one of the top football recruits in the State of Washington. Only nine months after graduating from high school, he was the only freshman to start on Notre Dame’s national championship game team, earning him All American Freshman honors.
Slated to be team captain entering his junior year, an academic matter forced him to step away from school and football for a year. That began his engagement with Shawn and Tom.
During his year off from school, Keivarae worked as a marketing intern for Tom, took four classes at a local college, and prepared his body for a return to the gridiron. There was only one obstacle: He would have to re-apply to Notre Dame. That was Keivarae’s pivot point. He succeeded. He was readmitted to Notre Dame, completed his senior season, entered the draft and is now in his third year playing in the NFL. In 2018, he returned to Notre Dame to finish his final credits and earn a degree in business. He is the only college graduate in his family.
Going into his senior year in high school, Gat played AAU basketball with Phil Hoban, one of Tom’s sons. Over time, Tom came to see Gat as much more than a gifted athlete and a conversation started. Gat was a Lost Boy from Sudan who came to the US as a child refugee and eventually lived with extended family in the Seattle area. Few in his house were fluent in English. None had even contemplated going to college. By the time Tom and Gat were in a comfortable enough relationship to talk about his future after high school, Gat missed most of the key deadlines to apply for college that year. For Gat, this was his pivot point. The more he talked with Tom and spent time with Phil, the more he began to believe he could reach high and that he was everything Tom told him he was and could be. If he was willing to work harder than he had ever worked before, Tom convinced Gat that college could be a reality for him. Nine months later and through the support of the Pivot Point Project, Gat began his studies as a freshman at the University of Portland with a full diversity scholarship and four years later graduated with a business degree. He was the only college graduate in his family, but has become an inspiration to other Sudanese Lost Boy’s who are now dreaming of college themselves.
Scott Laigo, a recent North Everett resident, is the founder and lead speaker with Student Athlete Advocates (SAA) on a local and statewide level. SAA addresses the eligibility, recruiting and financial aid process for high school students. Although one of the tennets of SAA is to help marginalized communities, they work with all families in this highly confusing and ever-changing arena. Before starting SAA, Scott was an elementary, high school and college coach in many sports, but mainly in football. His last coaching job was the head coach at Garfield High School in Seattle, WA. He is passionate about access, resources, and equality within youth sports. He is also an adoptee, Type 1 diabetic and has an amazing life story. Scott is married with two stepsons, and a daughter, with six wonderful grandchildren.
Kaitlin Hoban graduated in the top of her class from Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA. She began her undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame as a pre-med major but quickly realized that a career in the field of nursing was her passion. She transferred to the University of Portland for their nationally renowned nursing program and graduated magna cum laude with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
While at UP, she was active in the admissions office, served as a teaching assistant in the School of Nursing Learning Resource Lab, and volunteered through the Big Brothers Big Sisters school based program at a local elementary school.
Upon graduating from the University of Portland, Kaitlin went on to work as a registered nurse at Seattle Children’s Hospital on the Inpatient Medical Unit for six years. She served as a preceptor for new staff, was active in the nursing mentor program, and participated in multiple quality improvement projects. During this time, Kaitlin also completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the University of Washington. Her final doctoral project involved improving access to health care for children with asthma by maximizing school-based health centers. She completed an additional one-year post-graduate training at Seattle Children’s Hospital in the inaugural cohort of their new Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program and is now working full time as a Nurse Practitioner in the Neurosurgery Department at Seattle Children’s Hospital where she manages care for patients with a variety of diagnoses in both the hospital and clinic setting.
Kaitlin is in many ways and inspiration for the Pivot Point Project as well, proving that a student’s passion and college alignment are not an exact science but that, with the right support and counsel, the perfect college fit can be found.
In her spare time, Kaitlin can be found in Seattle enjoying a glass of wine with friends, weekends with family at Mission Beach, or a Mariner’s baseball game.
Shannon (Hoban) Winters was valedictorian of her class at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA. She went on to earn a BA in Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Washington and a Master’s Degree in Engineering from Stanford University.
Throughout her undergraduate and graduate education, she tutored students in math and physics. Upon graduating from Stanford University, she went on to work at an Academic Consulting company in the Silicon Valley. In this role, she led the company’s STEM team and worked closely with international partners to explore summer school opportunities. Additionally, and most impactful for her, she also helped students as an academic coach, subject matter tutor, and SAT/ACT tutor.
Driven by the desire to serve a more diverse student body, she went on to work at Stanford University, first as a coordinator of middle and high school programs from students from all backgrounds and from all over the world. She then worked in the Continuing Studies Department serving students who are looking to enrich their lives through post-graduate education. In this position, she quickly assumed more and more responsibility in the financial department. Currently Associate Director of Finance and Administration for Stanford Introductory Studies, Shannon manages an $11M budget and provides administrative support (HR, facilities, IT) for a staff of forty. Her academic and professional accomplishments have very direct application to our work at The Pivot Point Project.
Shannon met her husband, Ian Winters, while both were in graduate school at Stanford. Ian completed his PhD in genetics in 2018. They continue to live in Palo Alto, CA while Ian begins a career with a venture-capital backed start up firm working on a cancer cure. They have two young children that keep them busy in their spare time.
Ellie Hoban attended Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA and went on to graduate from the University of Notre Dame where she earned a BA in Science and Business and a minor in Poverty Studies. During her years at Notre Dame, Ellie performed several research projects relating to education, working closely with the South Bend, IN Community School Corporation in South Bend, Indiana, nonprofit organizations in Seattle and New York City, and the Notre Dame Center for STEM Education.
Ellie has applicable international experience, as well, working as an English and math tutor for at-risk youth nonprofit organizations in Mexico, Ireland, and South Africa which can be useful for Pivot Point Project youth with diverse backgrounds trying to navigate the college application process.
Upon graduating from Notre Dame, she went on to work as a technology consultant at Deloitte Consulting in Chicago. While at Deloitte, Ellie primarily focused on large scale Salesforce.com technology transformations. She worked with clients across various sectors concentrating on clients in the Life Sciences, State Government, and Higher Education industries. With a passion for improving access to quality education in all communities regardless of socioeconomic status, Ellie lead several pro-bono client engagements at Deloitte working with local Chicago schools and after-school programs. She was a mentor and tutor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and was involved with various skills-based volunteering events at Deloitte.
With a burning passion to transform the way education is delivered to youth in America, Ellie stepped out of professional life and in 2018 began a graduate program at Harvard University pursuing a Masters of Education in Technology, Innovation, and Education. She hopes to use her degree to combine her technology background with her passion for improving education as a means for empowering students from all socioeconomic backgrounds through enhanced educational opportunities.
Ellie is an avid runner, having completed several marathons. She is close to her three sisters and when not at school or work will usually be found at her parent’s home on Mission Beach baking and enjoying family life.
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Maria (Kosse) Shipp graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 2010. After graduating from high school, Maria then attended the University of Notre Dame where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts in American Studies and International Peace Studies. She was awarded the highest departmental honors for her Senior Thesis, which was published in The University of Notre Dame Journal of Undergraduate Research in 2015. She is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society, the oldest, and most prestigious, academic honors society in the United States. After graduating college in 2014, Maria moved to Chicago where she worked for Fjord, the design and innovation arm of Accenture Interactive, as a User Experience Program Manager. She moved to Seattle in March of 2017, where she still works for Fjord and is responsible for managing complex, multi-disciplinary digital strategy and research programs for global clients. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with her husband, Harry, and their golden retriever puppy, reading, and exercise.
Jeremy is a Professional Decathlete and 2016 Olympian. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he went on to be a Multiple All-American for the University of Washington and a three-time member of Team USA. A dynamic speaker and remarkable athlete, his academic achievements at The University of Washington (BA) and journey from high school to college (also admitted into Stanford University) offers a unique ability to counsel high school students who may not realize how far their stretch schools inside of our 2-2-2 program might take them. For Jeremy, his decision took him eventually to the Olympics and stardom. Jeremy remains passionate about competing at the elite level in track and field, but is also pursuing acting and media commercial work, motivational speaking, photographing dynamic landscapes when traveling, creating collaborations with local artists, and sharing his own knowledge of training, health, and wellness.
Born and raised in a suburb outside Chicago, IL, Harry graduated from Lake Forest High School in 2010. He attended the University of Notre Dame and played soccer on an athletic scholarship, graduating Magna Cum Laude (3.9 GPA) in 3.5 years with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. During his four years as a letter winner, Harry was a 3 time Big East Academic All-Star, 2 time Rockne Scholar-Athlete Award Winner, 6 time Dean’s List honoree, 2 time Academic All-American and 2 time Scholar All-American. In 2013, as captain, Harry helped lead the Notre Dame Men’s Soccer team to its first ever National Championship. That year, he was named the ACC Player of the Year, Academic All-American of the Year for Division 1 Men’s Soccer, and runner-up for National Player of the Year.
Harry went on to sign a contract with The Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer (MLS) and was named runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 2014 . After a one-year stint in Montreal, he joined the Seattle Sounders in 2017. Throughout his years in the league, Harry has been a member of the MLS Players’ Union as his team’s representative and has had an active role in negotiating its most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement.
In his spare time, Harry enjoys playing golf, cooking, trying new restaurants, and playing with his (and his wife’s) golden retriever puppy.
A native of Boston, MA, Miles Craigwell is a passionate competitor, social connector, and a Vice President at USI Insurance Services.
A graduated of Brown University, he was a two-sport athlete and developed his leadership skills as the 2009 Class Leader as elected by the Brown Alumni Association, where he earned a B.A. in Business Economics. He leveraged his athletic skills at the next level as a free agent in the National Football League. Looking for something else, he traded his passion for football for a pair of boots and a gum shield, landing a spot on the USA National Rugby Team.
While representing The USA Rugby Team, he participated in an annual ten-stop international tournament that took him around the world and helped establish his international friendships. After a meeting with Chris Prentice of USI Insurance Services, Miles brought his athletic and academic prowess to Seattle, WA, where he soon became a sales leader in the Executive Benefits department, specializing in disability insurance. For the past five years, Mr. Craigwell has received a variety of accolades including the “Heavy Hitter Award” for record sales quota nationally and the “PEAK Producer Award” in both 2012 and 2015 for regional quarterly new business and growth.
Miles is an inspiration for the Pivot Point Project as well. While his accomplishments are many, he remains remarkably humble and particularly genuine. He and Tom became friends through is active member at the Washington Athletic Club and The 101 Club, where he is currently serving on the Membership Review Committee, the Membership and Marketing Committee, the Athletic Committee and the Board of Governors.
A Downtown Seattle resident, Miles has a heart for community-based initiatives, serving on various boards. His most enduring volunteer and community-based relationship is with his church family, the Church of Christ, where he has been an active member since 2008. That shared commitment to faith and core calling to serve each other is the shared ideal that so strongly connected Tom and Miles.
Miles remains an active athlete with a passion for travel.
Jamar Williams is an Academic Adviser for a high school completion program and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Skagit Valley College. Passionate about helping youth fulfill their full God-given potential, he was also high school boys’ basketball coach for several schools in the state of Washington, including as head coach at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA, where he coached Phil Hoban.Jamar was instrumental in Phil earning a Division III college basketball offer and has helped many other student-athletes get into their stretch colleges by leveraging their gifts. Our Pivot Point Project program is greatly influenced by Jamar’s insight into how to package high school athletes and organize a plan to secure them a college athletics experience, including earning scholarships and other forms of financial aid.
He is an inspiration for our program on many levels, including his own story. Growing up the son of a single hard-working mom in the Central District of Seattle, Jamar earned his way into Kennedy Catholic High School where he was a two sport star in both basketball and track. He was a two-time all-league basketball player, including being awarded most valuable player, as well as an all-state honorable mention. He also won league, district, state and a national title in the 110 high hurdles.
Jamar knew that education was critical to his future. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Ohio University all while participating in track and basketball.
Jamar has two daughters who keep him active in his spare time.
Cathi and Dave Lee are long-time friends of the Hoban family. An active and close family, the Lee’s and their two sons, Corey and Cameron, were classmates of some of the Hoban children through Immaculate Conception Grade School in Everett. Phil and Corey could often be seen on the basketball court at the local YMCA in their youth. Tom and Corey connected after he graduated from Everett High School and organized a plan to earn him into college.
They are an avid outdoors family spending weekends backpacking, fishing, crabbing and downhill skiing, usually with friends and family. Cathi has been active at Northshore Christian Academy, Everett High School, Immaculate Conception Grade School, Scouts, numerous auctions, boards and charities.
On December 8, 2015, the Lee’s tragically lost their oldest son, Corey, to an accidental overdose while at Eastern Washington University, where he was just beginning his dream and an active member of a fraternity.
Since then, the Lee’s have become more outspoken about the drug epidemic and more specifically trying to change the stigma of addiction and recovery by telling their story. That has led Cathi to team up with Snohomish County, the City of Everett and Snohomish County Health District to put on an annual International Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil.
She continues to look for ways to serve youth and families dealing with addiction, including through the Pivot Point Project.
Steve Schmutz is currently President of Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA, consistently one of the state’s top performing academic and extracurricular high schools in the State of Washington and the only Catholic College Prep High School in Snohomish County.
As the President, and previously as Principal and teacher, he has devoted himself to prepare students to become active global citizens and future world leaders, a Jesuit ideal that was instilled in him as a youth at Spokane’s Gonzaga Prep High School and then Santa Clara University (BA), Gonzaga University (MIT), and Seattle University (M.Ed.). “My goal is for students to realize the means upon which they can make a difference, to act with virtue and justice and serve others as servant leaders”.
Steve has helped shape Archbishop Murphy High School accordingly, building service and retreat programs that help students become “people for others” as they practice justice and act justly at the local, national, and international level. Under his leadership, Archbishop Murphy has placed 99% of its graduates into colleges of their choice.
His professional achievements at Archbishop Murphy High School and Eastside Catholic High School (Sammamish, WA) include classroom teaching excellence, leadership at retreats, coaching sports and leading with his Jesuit ideals intact at all times.
Residents of Edmonds, WA, Steve and his wife are busy parents as well, following their son and daughter’s active lives.
John Olson works for Everett Community College as the Vice President of College Advancement. He was instrumental in organizing the right academic plan with transferrable credits for Keivarae Russell’s re-admittance into Notre Dame.
Today, he is leading fundraising, communications, and local government relations efforts on behalf of the college while serving as the Executive Director of the Everett Community College Foundation. During his tenure at EvCC, John has worked as a faculty member, division dean, instruction vice president, and led teams working on accreditation, assessment, and strategic planning. He has been involved in the community as a board member for several organizations, including Archbishop Murphy High School, Everett Public Schools Foundation, Everett Public Library, Rotary Club of Everett, and Snohomish County Public Defender Association.
A native of Pullman, Washington, John attended schools in Pullman, Prescott, and Chimacum, then graduated from Chimacum High School in 1979. He earned a BA from Gonzaga University and graduate degrees from Washington State University (M.A. in Communications) and the University of Washington (Ph.D. in Communication).
He and his wife, Mary Kate Olson, have three children – Daniel, Emily, and Andrew.
A native of Olympia, WA, Jason McDonald is the Dean of Admissions at the University of Portland, a Catholic university in Portland, OR where both Kaitlin Hoban and Tom Hoban, Jr. graduated. He is a 2012 Miltner Award recipient, the highest award earned at the University of Portland given to employees of exemplary and outstanding service to The University.
A graduate of Whitman College (BA Psychology) and Washington State University (Ed.M.), he was instrumental in our own Gat Bol’s journey from high school to graduating from the University of Portland by way of a full ride diversity scholarship. In many ways, Jason is as important an inspiration for the Pivot Point Project as any one individual.
Active on many boards and other industry-related groups, Jason and his wife can often be found supporting local Catholic education with their own young family, coaching CYO basketball, and staying active.
Jane hails from Everett, WA where she graduated from Everett High School and then went on to earn a B.A. in Business from the University of Washington followed by an M.Ed. at City University. She completed two vocational programs, earning certificates from Central Washington University in Vocational Education and The University of Washington in Career Development. After a twenty career in the computer industry with Boeing, Storage Technology, and IBM as a computer programmer, marketing representative, and systems engineer, she followed a calling to serve youth and started a second career as an Occupational Information Specialist, Vocational Counselor, Director of Vocational Education and School Counselor in both public and private schools. Her twenty-four year career as a guidance and college counselor and career specialist in Mukilteo School District, Snohomish School District and most recently at Archbishop Murphy High School became her passion. Her work at Archbishop Murphy connected her to the Hoban family where she counseled many of the Hoban children. “Education counseling is a way to instill hope and promise in every individual”, she says. Jane lives that statement out in her passionate commitment to working with youth.
Jane is retired and resides in Snohomish County today where she is active in the community and in family life.
Raised in Walla Walla, WA by parents who instilled values of hard work and treating people with respect, Tim is a first generation college graduate who earned Bachelor degrees in Applied Psychology and Education from Eastern Washington University and a Masters degree in School Counseling and Personal Services from the University of Southern Mississippi. His thirty-six year career in education includes serving as a teacher, principal, and coach, as well as chair of the guidance and college counseling department at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, WA, where he met and counseled some of the Hoban family. In addition to his years as an educator, he worked for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL and the Snohomish County Juvenile Detention Center.
In 2017, he retired and moved back to Walla Walla with his wife where they are working with special education students in the local schools while spending a great deal of time with their three adult children and many grandkids.
